Why home modifications matter
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation and death among older Australians. The vast majority of falls occur at home — and many are entirely preventable through targeted modifications. Beyond falls prevention, the right modifications can maintain independence, reduce carer burden, and meaningfully extend the time your loved one can remain safely in their own home.
The most impactful modifications
Bathroom and toilet
- Grab rails beside the toilet and in the shower or bath
- Non-slip flooring or mats
- Shower seat or walk-in shower conversion
- Raised toilet seat or toilet surround frame
- Handheld shower head
Bedroom and living areas
- Bed rail or bed assist handle
- Adjustable bed height
- Grab rails along hallways
- Adequate and well-positioned lighting, including motion-sensor night lights
- Removal of loose rugs and trip hazards
Entry and external areas
- Ramp installation if there are steps at the entry
- Wider doorways (if required for wheelchair or mobility aid)
- Secure, well-lit pathways
- Railing on all external steps
How to fund home modifications
- Support at Home funding — home modifications can be funded through your loved one's care package, subject to assessment and approval
- Home Modification and Maintenance scheme (some states) — low-cost or subsidised modifications for eligible older Australians
- Department of Veterans' Affairs — eligible veterans may access home modification funding through DVA
- Private funding — for modifications not covered by government programs, private purchase is sometimes the most practical option
