What is the Support at Home program?

Support at Home is the Australian Government's new in-home aged care program, starting 1 July 2025. It replaces Home Care Packages and a few other older programs, and it's designed to be simpler, more flexible, and more personal.

The idea is straightforward: instead of waiting months for a rigid package, eligible people get assessed once, assigned a level of funding that matches their needs, and can start receiving support far faster. Families have more say in how the funding is used — and providers (like us) have more room to design care that actually fits.

Who is it for?

Support at Home is for older Australians who want to stay living at home rather than move into residential care. You're likely eligible if you:

  • Are aged 65 or older (50+ if you're Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander)
  • Are finding some daily tasks harder than they used to be
  • Would benefit from some support to keep living at home safely
  • Are an Australian citizen or permanent resident
What changes

What's actually changing?

  1. 01

    Faster access.

Home Care Packages often involved long wait times. Support at Home is designed to get people receiving care much sooner, with simpler assessment processes.

  2. 02

    Clearer funding levels.

Instead of four Home Care Package levels, Support at Home uses eight classifications, better matched to actual needs.

  3. 03

    More flexibility.

Funding can be used across a wider range of services — domestic help, personal care, allied health, home modifications, equipment — without as many restrictions.

  4. 04

    Better short-term support.

A new Restorative Care pathway helps people recover after a hospital stay or health setback, with intensive short-term support.

  5. 05

    End-of-life care.

A dedicated pathway for people in the final stages of life, with more support at home where most people want to be.

If you're already on HCP

Already on a Home Care Package?

You don't need to do anything dramatic. Existing Home Care Package recipients transition into Support at Home automatically, with protections in place so no one is worse off during the change. If you've got a package now, you keep your support.

That said, it's worth reviewing what you're using the package for — Support at Home offers more flexibility, and you may be able to use your funding in ways that weren't possible before.

How to prepare

How to prepare your family.

Step 01

Start the My Aged Care process now.

Even if you don't need support urgently, getting registered and assessed means you're ready when you do. It's free.

Step 02

Talk as a family.

What matters most about staying at home? What would good support actually look like? The conversation is easier before a crisis.

Step 03

Choose a provider you trust.

You'll work with them closely, often over years. Character and consistency matter more than checklists.

Step 04

Ask the right questions.

Will I have the same support worker? How fast can we adjust hours if needs change? Who do I call if something's wrong? Great providers welcome those questions.
