How to choose the right NDIS provider: 10 questions to ask.

Choosing a provider is one of the most important decisions you'll make on the NDIS. These 10 questions will help you find the right fit.

Why provider choice matters

One of the most powerful features of the NDIS is that you choose your own providers. The right provider can transform your NDIS experience. The wrong one can leave you frustrated, unsupported, and underserved. Take time to do your research — you have every right to interview providers before committing.

10 questions to ask any NDIS provider

1. Are you a registered NDIS provider?

Registered providers have been audited against the NDIS Practice Standards. This is a meaningful quality benchmark. If you're agency managed, you can only use registered providers.

2. What services do you specialise in?

Some providers are generalists; others specialise in specific disabilities, age groups or support types. Make sure their expertise matches your needs.

3. How do you match support workers to participants?

A good provider will ask about your preferences, personality, interests and communication style — and take these seriously when matching you with workers.

4. What happens if my regular worker is sick or leaves?

Staff turnover and sick days are realities. Ask how consistency is managed and how quickly a replacement can be organised.

5. How do you handle incidents and complaints?

Every provider should have a clear, documented complaints process. Ask to see it. Ask how incidents are reported to the NDIS Commission.

6. Are all your workers screened?

All workers delivering NDIS supports must hold a current NDIS Worker Screening Check. This is non-negotiable. Confirm this is the case.

7. How do you communicate with families?

Ask how often they provide updates, how quickly they respond to calls and messages, and who your main point of contact will be.

8. Can I speak to other participants or families?

Reputable providers are happy to facilitate references or share testimonials. Peer feedback is invaluable.

9. What is your cancellation policy?

Understand the terms before you sign anything. The NDIS has rules around cancellations, but providers can set policies within those rules.

10. What makes you different?

Listen carefully to how they answer this. Great providers talk about their people, their values and their outcomes. Less impressive providers talk about their systems and paperwork.
